Livostin Eye Drops general information

What is Livostin Eye Drops used for?

Livostin Eye Drops are used to treat allergic conjunctivitis, which is an allergic reaction in the eye causing irritation and inflammation of the eye.  Allergic conjunctivitis can be seasonal, caused by pollen (hay fever) or perennial, caused by allergens such a house dust mites, mould or animal fur.  Livostin Eye Drops act locally on the eye to relieve symptoms like itchy red, swollen and watery eyes.

How does Livostin Eye Drops work?

Livostin Eye Drops contain levocabastine, which is an antihistamine that blocks the action of histamine, a chemical released from mast cells in response to allergens like pollen, during an allergic reaction.  Levocabastine in Livostin Eye Drops binds to the H1 receptor on the conjunctival cells in the eye (mast and epithelial cells in the lining of the white of the eye) and blocks the histamine-mediated production of inflammatory chemicals like prostaglandins and leukotirenes from the conjunctiva that cause inflammation and swelling.  Levocabastine in Livostin Eye Drops also prevents increased vascular permeability caused by dilation of blood vessels due to histamine, which causes watery eyes.  Levocabastine in Livostin Eye Drops also acts on the mast cells to reduce the amount of histamine released.  This dual action of Levocabastine in Livostin Eye Drops reduces symptoms of seasonal allergic conjunctivitis like itchy red, swollen and watery eyes.
