What is Freedom Spray used for?

Freedom Spray is used for the treatment, prevention and control of fleas, ticks and biting lice and also to treat flea allergy dermatitis in cats and dogs.  Freedom Spray is a fast acting topical treatment that helps get rid of existing flea infestations for at least one month and prevents new flea infestations for up to three months.  Freedom Spray also protects against the spread of tick fever, a bacterial disease such as Lyme disease caused by the bacteria Borrelia or Rocky Mountain spotted fever caused by the bacteria Rickettsia.  Tick fever is passed on by the bite of an infected tick and causes skin rash, fever, headache and fatigue and can spread to the joints, heart and nervous system.  Fleas and ticks exist in the environment in grass and in house carpets, so in it important to disrupt their life cycle and prevent the spread on the infestation.  Freedom Spray is safe to use in dogs and cats with no toxic effects; it can also be used on puppies and kittens from eight weeks old and is safe to use on breeding, pregnant or lactating animals.

How does Freedom Spray work?

Freedom spray contains fipronil a broad spectrum topical insecticide (ectoparsiticidal) belonging to phenylpyrazole class of insecticide.  Freedom spray kills adult fleas and flea larvae, also ticks and lice, by disrupting the insect central nervous system.  Fipronil does not affect mammals and works by interference with the insect specific gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamate (GluCl), regulated chloride channels causing paralysis and death.  Fipronil in Freedom spray is not absorbed by skin; instead it spreads over the body by mixing with the body oils and kills 100% of the fleas or ticks within 24-48 hours of application.  Fipronil in Freedom spray kills newly emerged adult fleas before they lay eggs and usually before they bite decreasing the risk of flea allergy dermatitis.  It also kills all stages of ticks preventing tick-borne disease transmission.  Fipronil in Freedom spray collects in the hair follicles of the skin where it is slowly released to provide long-lasting protection from flea and tick infestation.  Freedom spray has long lasting action and kills fleas for up to 3 months and ticks for one month.

What are the side effects of Freedom Spray?

The most commonly reported side effects when taking Freedom Spray include temporary redness and itching at the site of application.

How should Freedom Spray be applied?

Attach the pipe to the spray gun and before applying Freedom Spray, ensure you are in a well ventilated area, preferable outside, wearing gloves and that your cat or dog is restrained.  Hold the spray 10-20cm distance from your pet and spray over the body, concentrating on the infected areas.  Massage your pet’s body to ensure the spray gets right down to the skin and allow the spray to air dry but and keep away from a source of heat until dry.  Do not allow your pet to lick the spray and keep away from the eyes.  Leave for 48 hours after application before allowing your cat or dog into water but once it has spread over the skin Freedom Spray remains effective even if your cat or dog gets wet, is bathed or shampooed.

How often should Freedom Spray be applied?

You should apply Freedom Spray monthly to prevent infestation with fleas and ticks and it is effective even when in water or exposed to sunlight.  If you have more than one cat or dog in your household you should treat them all at the same time.

How should Freedom Spray be stored?

You should store your Freedom Spray below 25°C in a cool dry place.
