Fasigyn general information

What is Fasigyn used for?

Fasigyn tablets 500mg are used to treat bacterial and parasitic infections caused by susceptible bacteria and protozoan (single cell) parasites.  Fasigyn tablets 500mg are an oral treatment for the infection trichomoniasis, a genital infection of the female and male genitourinary tract caused by the protozoan Trichomonas vaginalis; vaginitis, a vaginal infection; gingivitis; inflammation of the gums caused by bacterial plaque; giardiasis, an intestinal infection caused by the protozoan giardia lamblia; amoebiasis or dysentery, caused by the protozoan entamoeba histolytica.  Fasigyn tablets 500mg are used to treat infections of the skin (cellulitis), blood (septicaemia) chest and lung (pneumonia and empyema), genitals or womb lining (endometritis), inflammation and infection of the peritoneum or lining of the abdomen (peritonitis).  Fasigyn tablets 500mg are used for the prevention of post-operative bacterial wound infections after gynecological and stomach surgery.  Infection of the stomach with the bacteria Helicobacter pylori is associated with the development of peptic ulcers and Fasigyn tablets 500mg help eradicate the bacteria and reduce the incidence of ulcers, in combination with other medication.

How does Fasigyn work?

Fasigyn tablets 500mg contain tinidazole an antibacterial and antiprotozoal that has activity against a wide range of pathogenic micro-organisms, including species of anaerobic bacteria belonging to the the bacteroides, fusobacteria, clostridia, eubacteria, anaerobic cocci, Helicobacter pylori and gardnerella vaginalis; and the protozoa trichomonas, entamoeba histolytica, giardia lamblia and balantidium coli.  Tinidazole in Fasigyn tablets 500mg works by entering the cell of a susceptible bacteria or protozoa and causes damage to the bacterial or protozoan DNA, which disrupt its structure and inhibits DNA synthesis, thereby preventing microbial cell growth.
