Clavet-250 general information

What is Clavet-250 used for?

Clavet-250 tablets are a combination veterinary antibiotic used for short-term treatment of a wide range of bacterial infections commonly found in cats and dogs.  These include skin disease, such as deep and superficial pyodermas, which are infections of the skin where bacteria have entered a cut or a wound causing symptoms like itching, pustules (inflamed pus filled swelling), hair loss, raised lesions, dried discharge.  Clavet-250 tablets are also used to treat urinary tract infections, upper and lower respiratory tract infection and enteritis (inflammation of the small intestine).

How does Clavet-250 work?

Clavet-250 tablets contain a combination of two antibiotics.  Amoxycillin is as an antibiotic similar to penicillin and belongs to the beta-lactam group of antibiotics, which block the formation of the bacterial cell wall and this kills the bacteria.  However, amoxycillin can be inactivated by the bacterial enzyme beta-lactamase that makes certain bacteria resistant to amoxycillin.  Clavulanic acid is an antibiotic structurally related to the penicillins that is able to inactivate a wide range of beta-lactamase enzymes commonly found in amoxycillin-resistant bacteria.  This dual action of Clavet-250 tablets provides a broad spectrum antibiotic and a beta-lactamase inhibitor, which extends the range of susceptible bacteria.  Clavet-250 tablets are effective against a wide range of bacteria, including susceptible Staphylococci, Streptococci and Escherichia coli, and are used to treat infections common to cats and dogs caused by these bacteria.

What does Clavet-250 contain?

Clavet-250 tablets contain the active ingredients amoxycillin (200mg) and clavulanic acid (50mg) in a palatable base.

Treating infection in cats and dogs with Clavet-250

Clavet-250 tablets contain a combination of two antibiotics, amoxycillin, that kills bacteria, and clavulanic acid that inactivates the beta-lactamase enzyme commonly found in amoxycillin-resistant bacteria and therefore helps prevent resistance to amoxycillin.  Clavet-250 tablets are used for short-term treatment of a wide range of bacterial infections commonly found in cats and dogs.  These include skin diseases, such as deep and superficial pyodermas, which are infections of the skin where bacteria have entered a cut or a wound causing symptoms like itching, pustules (inflamed pus filled swelling), hair loss, raised lesions, dried discharge.  Clavet-250 tablets are also used to treat urinary tract infections, upper and lower respiratory tract infection and enteritis (inflammation of the small intestine).
